How to Write an Essay Concerning Nationalism and Ultra-Nationalism

Essay Concerning Nationalism and Ultra-Nationalism

When students are required to tackle essays on nationalism and ultra-nationalism, they are expected to know the basic definition of these terms and their contextual application in real life, and how they apply to the case in question that one is writing on. The topics that can be covered are diverse and can be as general as the effects of nationalism and ultra-nationalism on the cohesion of a nation.

There can also be a case where the topic may be a case study of a specific government. Whichever the case, proper comprehension of what is required is critical. Thorough research must also be carried out so that one develops factual arguments with reliable evidence.

Typically, an article must have a strong introduction and thesis statement, the main body with the main points, and the conclusion. All these components must be framed properly with the acceptable language so that the paper can have a logical flow of ideas and the arguments contained must make sense.

You must then proofread the work so that you can get rid of awkward sentences, typographical errors, grammar mistakes and any improper use of punctuations. The final piece must be refined and excellent.

Introduction and Thesis Statement

The section must give an overview of what the essay is going to discuss. The beginning may be general. However, the student must be more specific as they progress towards the body. The essence of the introduction is to make the reader more interested in reading the rest of the paper.  For this reason, the introductory part must be catchy, interesting and give a good first impression of your knowledge.

The reader is supposed to know the perspective the essay is going to take a right from the start. It is thus important to include a thesis statement. The thesis statement is a sentence that provides a brief description of the main argument. Furthermore, mention the points the essay is going to address without going into the details or giving any specific examples. Normally, an introduction is usually one paragraph. However, for long articles, it may have more paragraphs.

Nationalism is a sense of love for an individual’s nation. It is characterized by the devotion to the republic’s values and philosophy. When nationalism is embraced, the government and the citizens want to own it and maintain its sovereignty wholly. As a result, self-rule becomes embraced thus minimizes interference from outside nations.

When nationalism becomes too strong, it is referred to as ultra-nationalism. While nationalism is important to a country as it enforces more unity among the citizens, ultra-nationalism may lead to national problems such as violation of human rights and cases of totalitarianism.

The Body

The body is where the main points are explained explicitly with applicable examples. Each paragraph must have its idea or argument backed supported by fresh evidence or statistics. There must be a relationship between a given thought and the topic in question to make the essay relevant.

Typically, a short article has four to five paragraphs. It may be longer for a paper that has many points depending on the area of nationalism and ultra-nationalism that you are dealing with.

When people are bound together by nationalism, they tend to have struggles that take them in the same direction aiming to achieve the same national goal. Citizens that share the same vision trust each other. As a result, there is cohesion, and they tend to live in peace with each other.

A state that enjoys tranquillity is likely to develop more because they can easily and wholesomely participate in the agenda of the nation without being derailed. In a republic where the citizens feel like they are part of the development policy, there is likely to be a faster growth of the national income hence experience more prosperity.

During external attacks, the countries that have a sense of nationalism go through several atrocities together. When people are together during such crises, they give each other more strength to persevere, fight and win. A good example is what happened in Rome during the Punic war. As much as the war led to the death of close to 20% of the adult population, they were able to win because nationalism united them.

Every country wants to take care of its interests with nationalism. They always want to achieve the best for themselves and may not want to know what happens in other nations. Different nations, therefore, begin competing with each other in a bid to make themselves better and more prosperous. Such competing interest could lead to war especially for wealth such as lakes which are shared at the border. One country will often want to have more control over the resource than the other. This can lead to an outbreak of a war which can be very costly in economic terms. This is not desirable.

This is where the main thoughts and arguments of the essay are summarised. You can take your final stand on the topic here. Ensure that you do not introduce any opinion that has not been discussed. Again, remember to relate the conclusion to the topic to make it obvious to the reader that you actually know what you are talking about and that you are still keeping in touch with the original idea.

Countries have distinct national values and philosophies. As a result, citizens have different feelings towards their nations. Sometimes people tend to feel a sense of nationalism when the country has performed well in a global event such as a good performance in an Olympics by its athletes. Ultra-nationalism may be experienced when a nation feels threatened by the actions of another country, and it needs to defend itself. It is important that any country finds a good balance between these two principles for it to succeed in the modern world where cooperation with other countries is critical.
